What is the Cold War?The Cold War go its name because there was actually no fighting that occurred between the USSR and America besides one American spy plane that was shot down. Essentially, it was more of a war of Truman vs. Stalin or communism vs. capitalism. Even though there was no actual fighting, there was still much tension between the two countries because of things like the Marshall Plan, the Truman Doctrine, and "the arms race"
The Arms RaceUnlike the Cold War where there was no fighting involved, the Arms Race featured a real race. However, the race was about misses and who could build the most powerful/plentiful. The first atomic bomb ever tested by the United States was in 1945 by the United States while the first atomic bomb tested by the USSR was in 1949.
How a Nuclear Bomb WorksBasically, they were powered by chain reactions. Most atomic bombs are made out of uranium and once one liberated atom strikes the uranium atom, it releases all of its energy onto the other uranium atoms which do the same causing a chain reaction. With millions of these atoms reacting with each other, it creates a lot of energy that is dispersed over a large area with the radioactive affects that uranium has.
