The Cold War was the longest war that America had ever been in. Even though there was no fighting, there was much tension between the USSR and America. However, the Cold War was a big part of America's history because it is the only thing that some people knew.
After World War II, America was officially at war against communism. Being the democracy that we are, we believed that it was the best for everyone to have since it worked so well. Our biggest enemy that we faced was the USSR, which was completely communistic. We knew that the USSR was a threat to the surrounding countries and we needed to contain it.
During WWII, America decided to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. Days later, the USSR declared war on Japan. America knew that if the USSR went to war against Japan, they would get all of the credit for defeating them. That's why America dropped the second bomb. This outraged the USSR and tensions grew between America and the USSR.
The Cold War had a lot to do with who had the biggest and baddest weapons of the time. We called this part of the Cold War the Arms Race. It was almost as if it was a scare tactic between the USSR and America to see who it the more superior of the two nations.
America was terrified of communism. The public was against everything about it. That is the reason why America was at war against communism itself. Everyone was terrified that communism would take over America one day and we would be like the USSR or any other communistic state.
The Korean War was not our war to fight but North Korea was a communist dictator ship, which is exactly what we were fighting against. We threw out support to South Korea and ended up winning nothing in return.
Eisenhower, the 34th president of the United States, did many things for and against the United States. He organized coups in Cuba that later helped lead to the tense 13 days during the Cold War, he invented NASA and the CIA, and he did many things for the Civil War.
The 1950's were a time for invention and change. The Civil Rights Movement was just starting to get into its worse/best years while many modernization was taking place. Things such as the TV, the production line, and suburban living was invented during this time.
Women were starting to take on some of the roles that the men had while at the same time being the perfect house wives that their husbands wanted them to be. They were still expected to be a perfect wife, make and take care of children, and cook and clean at home but many new oppertunaties were available for women.
